How to use JEE previous-year questions (PYQs) the right way

· 6 min read · Nit Bro team

Previous-year questions (PYQs) are the closest thing you have to the real exam. They show which concepts are tested, how deep the questions go and how the paper is worded. Used well, they are the highest-value practice material available. Used carelessly, they are wasted.

Why PYQs matter

  • They reveal what the examiners consider important in each chapter.
  • They train you to read questions the way the exam phrases them.
  • They show the level of difficulty you need to be comfortable with, no more and no less.

Concepts and question styles repeat across years, even when the exact questions don’t.

Phase 1: chapter-wise PYQs (alongside learning)

As soon as you finish a chapter, solve its PYQs. At this stage:

  • Don’t time yourself strictly. Focus on understanding.
  • Attempt every question honestly before reading the solution.
  • Mark questions you couldn’t solve and revisit them after a week.

This shows you immediately whether your understanding of the chapter is exam-ready.

Phase 2: mixed and full-length papers (final months)

In the last six to eight weeks, attempt complete papers under exam conditions: three hours, no breaks, no phone. Then analyse each paper as carefully as a mock test: sort every lost mark into concept, application or careless.

Save a few recent papers for the final weeks so you have fresh, realistic practice close to the exam.

Mistakes that waste PYQs

  1. Reading solutions instead of solving. Recognising a solution is not the same as being able to produce it.
  2. Solving the same paper repeatedly. By the third attempt you are remembering answers, not solving questions.
  3. Only counting the score. The analysis afterwards is where the improvement happens.
  4. Ignoring weak chapters. It’s tempting to keep practising what you’re good at. PYQs are most useful exactly where they’re uncomfortable.
  5. Using unverified answer keys. Unofficial keys sometimes contain mistakes. Use official answer keys from NTA wherever possible.

How many PYQs are enough?

There’s no magic number. A practical target is to cover the PYQs of every chapter at least once during your preparation, and to take several complete recent papers under timed conditions in the final phase. Depth of analysis matters more than volume.
